Ascent Trip ReportGothic Peak followed by Del Campo scrambles with the Olympia Mountaineers. There was also a Mazamas group planning to do both peaks as well so we let the Mazama group do Del Campo first followed by Gothic. The plan was to meet at Foggy Lake for lunch and trade beta.
Thunderstorms during the night. Plan for 6am start but another thunderstorm came through delaying our start to 8:30. Group of 7 ascended up to the ridge of Gothic Peak. There were still snowfields so we went above a moat and then scrambled up the east side of Gothic to the summit block. While on the summit, some more rain came through so we descended quickly down the scree field which was took a lot of effort due the type and size of the rock. We were down to Foggy Lake by lunchtime.
At 1:30, we left camp and headed up to Del Campo. The weather warmed after the rain came through. The heat slowed us down. There was still snow on the south facing side of Del Campo. The Mazama group went along the east side of the snowfield in the moat and did not use crampons/traction, but we decided it would be less energy to use our microspikes up to the top of the snowfield just below the gully. We tried to ascend the gully, but there were a lot of loose rocks and we did encounter some rock fall. We found a cairn on the left side of the gully and we were able to find the route up. There was quite a bit of exposure and some of the moves were challenging. Five of us summitted at 4:45. We slowly made our way down to the gully, glissaded down the snowfield and then back to camp. On hindsight we should not have gone in the gully at all. There appears to be a route just to the west of the gully that would be the best option. This is a class 3 scramble with an occasional 4th class move due to exposure and difficulty in some of the moves. We did carry a rope with us for the descent, but did not need to use with careful movement back down the mountain.
