Ascent Trip Reportwe used kathy rich + larry grant's trip reports for their recent start from murphy spring. thanks!
attached track is the drive to murphy spring. gmaps will take you there, but it has its usual problem of taking the shortest roads, not the best roads. in the dark in the very early morning i followed its directions and they sucked, but on the way out later i followed the obviously good roads back to NV-318. (it's about an hour at the speeds i drove.)
immediately after turning on to FS-648 you'll challenge your vehicle's approach and departure angles when the road dips into the wash, and there's no culvert to protect the road so it's washing out. there are three of these before you reach the trailhead... i'm kind of skeptical they'll last many more years, adding miles to this starting point as well. you'll need 4x4, high clearance for this road, but everything else up to this point a car could make.
there are still two more places worth investigating for starts: brady spring (greg drove out, says there's lots of scratchy trees alongside the road), and FS-102 which comes in to the north of timber peak: 102 is on the FSTopo 2016 layer (see caltopo.com) but not on 2013 (nor USGS). you probably want to call ely ranger station about 102 (i didn't make time to make the call).
overall not a peak i enjoyed, i'm not a fan of steep slopes with loose rock, and lots of side-hilling.
