Ascent Trip Report

Getting over to Austera requires crossing the Klawatti-Austera col. We made a short rappel down a fifth class chimney on the way there, but found an easier class 4 route above and climber's left of the chimney on the way back.

For Austera, we took option 3 described by Klenke here: https://www.summitpost.org/austera-peak/152991

Class 3 rightward traverse, exposed class 3/4 climb up and around, class 4/low 5 downclimb on overhanging jug/rail feature. We thought the final 30 feet was low fifth class on good positive holds, not 5.7 as Klenke suggests. We all soloed it fine in boots. Not much pro if you want to pitch it out. Two raps with a single 30m rope (second one down the chockstone gully has an awkward start) got us back to scramble terrain.

Overall, a very fun peak with one of the best views around!
