Ascent Trip ReportSignal Hill is only a 10-15 walk from the lodge. Since we were staying at the Mount Magazine Lodge, we had to get creative to come up with a hike that would give us enough miles to feel like we accomplished something and also go across the high point. We decided we would hike from the lodge across the Mossback Ridge Trail, hike the Benefield Loops, come back across Mossback Ridge, then hike up and over Signal Hill and back to the lodge using the self guided trail. All-in-all, it was about 10 miles I would say. No idea on the elevation gains/loses but it was pretty flat. This way it didn't feel like a glorified drive-up high point if we just went from the lodge to the top and back. All the trails were pretty easy but beautiful. And we got up close and personal with a hawk and dangled our legs off an overlook. Just a spectacular hike overall.
The actual high point is very well maintained. There are a couple plastic benches, a register which is inside a mailbox, an information board, the huge sign that says you are at the highpoint, the USGS marker, and a to scale Rock map of Arkansas on the ground, with the marker at the high point. Great high point. You can get to the top using 3 different trails.
Even though it was Memorial Day weekend, and they said every room was booked, the lodge and the park never felt crowded. And the drive in from Dallas had zero traffic. You can't go wrong coming here, whether you are a peak bagger or just want to get away for the weekend.
If you get the chance, you must stay at the lodge. It is so perfectly located. The best views on the mountain will be from whatever room you are staying in the lodge. It also has a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and nice rooms. Activities in the area besides hiking are climbing, hang gliding, kayaking, boating, wineries, stargazing, birdwatching, and much more. It is a very popular spot for bikers as well, whether they are just riding or staying.
One very clear night we watched the stars. In addition to countless stars, Mars was in full view and Jupiter could be seen as well. You could also see the moons of Jupiter through a telescope. At about 9:00 we saw the international space station fly across the sky, that was truly remarkable. One of our favorite high points.
