Ascent Trip Report

Parked along PCH near Gelson's (Albertsons on older maps) and took the path behind the Montage (from Treasure Island Park) down to the beach. Tide was pretty high but I was able to keep my feet dry on the approach. The scramble up to the top was easy,if a little slippery from last night's rain. The sunrise from the "island" was pretty great.

After returning to my car, I jogged north on PCH to get to Nyes Place, which I took up the (steep) hill to reach Close Benchmark. Nothing interesting here, just a very steep road until the top. Coming back from Close BM I tried to take the trail network down to behind the Gelson's, but I wasn't confident that I really new what I was doing and I was nervous about the parking meter running out of time before I got back so I ran back down Nyes the way I came.

After stopping at the car again to top up on water and stick a summit beer in my pack, I headed south on PCH to the Valido trail toward Niguel Hill and Aliso Peak. At the junction I headed for Niguel, finding an incredibly indistinct summit, the high point of which seemed to be somewhere within a tangle of brush. I stood on a picnic table nearby and called it close enough. Then it was back down to Aliso Peak on the main trail, where I had a beer, looked (unsuccessfully) for whales, and made the "interesting" decision to scramble down the use trail on the northwest side of the peak instead of retracing my steps on the main trail. This gets loose and rocky in parts, and requires a ~5 foot jump down to the Toovet trail at the end. It sure was interesting, though!

After that it was a quick jaunt through the neighborhood and then about a mile on PCH to get back to my car. Total mileage was 11 on the dot, with 2100' of climbing on the GPS watch. Overall a nice way to spend a beautiful morning while all the real trails are saturated and closed from the rain.
