Despite what the locals may tell you Skyline Benchmark is the highest point in the capital city of Topeka, Kansas. Many locals believe that the highest point is Burnett Mound only 0.5 miles to the north. The well-graded Skyline Parkway connects the two points so both are easily visited in a short period of time. You cannot see one from the other for an accurate hand-leveling to verify which one is higher because of trees on Skyline. Topographic maps show a less than 20-foot difference between the two points. The summit of Skyline was likely leveled upon installation of a large fenced-in utility tower. The benchmark is nowhere to be found. The 360 degree view from the bald summit of Burnett Mound is rather excellent as you can see northeast to the city skyline of Topeka only four miles away. According to local Indian legend the summit of Burnett Mound was built up to accommodate the burial of important ancestors. Because of the view it is easy to see why most would feel that Burnett Mound is the higher of the two points.
