The Hundred Peaks are significant summits in Southern California that are south of the Sierra Nevada, west of the Mojave Desert, and over 5000 feet high. There is a great deal of fine mountainous terrain in this region, including 10,000 foot peaks of the San Bernardino, San Jacinto, and San Gabriel Mounains, plus scores of lower summits stretching from San Diego to north of Santa Barbara.
When this list was first created in 1940, there were 112 peaks on it, but over the years peaks have been added so that now its title is terribly misleading. The number of peaks fluctuates, too, since a committee can vote to add or delete peaks frequently. Often peaks are removed from the list due to private landowners restricting access.
