Southeast USA Peaks with 2000 feet of ProminenceFront Runners List: Click to see list completion progress by climbers that log their climbs using Peakbagger.com. List DescriptionList Info
Even though the Southern Appalachians are higher than the Northern Appalachians, they can only muster 24 peaks with over 2000 feet of prominence, compared to 54 north of the Potomac. Lack of glaciation has left the southern peaks more rounded and gentle, and thus the ruggedness needed for lots of high prominence peaks is lacking. Still, this is a nice list, an excellent alternative to the list of tightly clustered 6000-foot peaks of the South. North Carolina claims 11 peaks on this list (3 shared with Tennessee), Virginia has 9, Tennessee another 3 aside from the border peaks, and West Virginia one (Spruce Knob).
Work has been done to extend this list down to all peaks with over 1600 feet of prominence, and at a future date this list may be also extended. Once down to about 1700 feet of prominence, though, things start to get confusing, with many peaks with similar values.
