List DescriptionThe "Second Lap" list shows the most prominent peak in every state that is not a state high point. For a climber that has climbed all the state high points, it represents an excellent list of peaks that can be done on a second tour through the USA, highlighting many exceptional peaks that may have been missed.
Peakbagger.com does not host a "second highest" list for the US States, mainly because a consistent prominence threshold for all states needs to be found and any value chosen is arbitrary. The second highest peak in any state is often a matter of debate--for Alaska, is it the North Peak of Denali or Saint Elias? For Florida, which low hill gets the honor? This list is much more straightforward, ignoring the cases where there are multiple candiates for the prominent peak.
Note that for North Carolina, the second most prominent peak (Clingmans Dome) is the state high point for Tennessee, and the third most prominent peak (Roan) is the Second Lap peak for Tennessee. Therefore, to force this list to have 50 unique peaks, the 4th most prominent peak (Huckleberry) was chosen for North Carolina.
