List DescriptionAny list of the highest peaks in California is dominated by the Sierra Nevada, where thousands of summits rise to over 10,000 feet. This list, however, excludes the Sierra Nevada peaks, providing a relatively short, geographically scattered list. These 10,000 footers range from the volcanoes of the Cascades in Northern California, through the higher fault-block ranges of the Great Basin, and down to the high summits of the San Bernadino, San Gabriel, and San Jacinto ranges near Los Angeles.
For anyone who thinks that high-altitude hiking and scrambling in California is equivalent to the Sierra, this list emphatically disproves that notion. The variety here makes for a unique and challenging list, but one requiring no special mountaineering skills. Mount Shasta is probably the hardest summit of the list, and it can be scrambled in a day by strong hikers.
