List Description

This list in no way attempts to show the thousands of state parks in the United States. It shows only a selected set with notable mountains. Since the federal government owns most of the significant mountainous terrain in the United States, and private landowners most of the remainder, there is very little land in the individual state park systems with serious topography.

Note that some of the parks on this list, notably Mount Mitchell and Mount Washington State Parks, are small enclaves surrounded by National Forest land.
