List Description

France is divided into 96 departrments, and in many ways they are more important than the 18 regions that are the primary divisions of the country. French postal codes and license plate codes are both based on the department number--every Frenchman knows a car with a "75" is from Paris.

Acknowledgments

Thanks to Lee Newton, who provided me with an updated and thoroughly researched list of these points.
