Europe

Introduction

Since I am unilateraly placing the Caucasus into a "Middle East" continent, that leaves the Alps alone as truly serious mountains in Europe. While the Pyrenees, Carpathians, Scandianvian ranges, and other lesser chains cover big chunks of Europe and offer fantastic scenery and challenge, the Alps dominate other European mountains the same way their icy pinnacles dominate the heart of the continent.

Superlatives

Mont Blanc at 15,771'/4807m is the highest peak in Europe, if you leave out the Caucasus as I do. Mulhacen (11,424'/3485m), in Spain's Sierra Nevada, is the highest peak in Europe outside of the Alps. The longest mountain range is the arc of the Carpathians, running from Romania to eastern Germany, which is longer but narrower than the Alps in their course from Austria to France.
