I am a hiker not a climber with ropes and such. I probably should have used ropes on a couple of climbs. Young and fearless, in the 1980's and early 90's. No GPS or even topo maps for the most part. I was a young service industry worker in Yellowstone park and later on the NPS trailcrew for 4 seasons. I worked trail crew in the Grand Canyon and the Apache Forest Blue primitive area also.I climbed several mountains with my Kmart boots (because I was paying for college at MSU). About 1988 I bought Asolo's & Danners. Much better boots.
I do not get out as much to the high mountains, because of work and family. I hope to semi retire in 2018 and I will be free to hike alot again(to more remote areas). I remember Montana and Wyoming in the 1980's and early 90's when there were not many rules about backpacking/camping. I camped among grizzlies many nights and had no problems. This a great website with the handy online topo's. Thanks Peakbagger.
