I'm a newly retired educator. A few years ago, I started thinking about hiking to high points, and my first one was Clingman's Dome in east Tennessee. The climb was not particularly scenic, and the day was hot. The trail is paved with asphalt, and most of it is not shaded, so all in all, it wasn't a very pleasant experience, but it was a start. Since that time, I've hiked to the top of Brasstown Bald in Georgia, Driskill "Mountain" in Louisiana, Mt. Woodall in Mississippi, and just a couple of weeks ago, my highest point yet -- Harney Peak in South Dakota. Well, now I'm on a roll. When I'm not running on a treadmill or pounding it out on a stair master, I'm plotting my next high point. I've set my sights on Mt. Magazine in Arkansas and Taum Sauk in Missouri. Here's hoping gas doesn't get up to $4.00 a gallon again! Peakbagging is a great motivator for staying in shape, and it gives me something to look forward to when I travel with my family. |
