Henry David Thoreau was a American author, philosopher, and naturalist, known for his works Walden and Civil Disobedience. He was also a devoted New England hill-walker who climbed several major summits in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. Thoreau had a deep relationship with the mountains that is matched by few other literary figures, and his experiences on the heights were an important part of his short life.
