Ascent Trip Report

I woke up before sunrise and got hiking. I passed a few deer in the parking lot and made my way onto the trail that heads to the smaller lakes. I knew from an attempt yesterday that I wasn't going to go to Papoose Lake at all, and was actually going to climb out of the valley as soon as I could. When I made the first dam I went off trail through the woods to the right. It was easy bushwhacking. Then I found a trail heading up the steep slope between cliffs of talus. Once above the precipice, I just headed up as straight as possible. This put me near a scree topped subsummit and on a meadow the undulated over to and up to the benchmark. I stayed on the grassy ridge and then had to climb up intermittent grass and boulders on what I kept thinking was the final pitch. The horizon rolled over five times before I saw what looked to be a cairn in the increasingly heavy fog. I had run part of this section because I was worried that the summit might get socked in and I could get disoriented. The cairn was indeed at the benchmark and there was finally a register to sign! (1/3 so far on this trip). I drank in my big moment (this was the last highpoint needed to connect my hometown of La Crosse, WI to my current home of Phoenix, AZ with cohps) and soon the faint white disk began to have an effect. The fog lifted and I could see what may have been the highest peaks in Utah. On the way down I scared abotu a dozen elk and they went scampering away. Instead of staying on the ridge until the point where I came up on it, I angled my descent to head straight for the easy way through the lake cliffs. From there it was a mere stroll to get back to the car. Next linkup has to be Mexico to Canada.
