Ascent Trip Report

The island of Hydra is a great place to feel how Greece used to be. There are no cars or motor vehicles permited on the island. There are basicly no roads to drive on anyway. There are stone, flag stone, concrete, and dirt paths. There are also many hiking trails that cross the island. The trip to Eres ( the highest point on the island 588 meters ) starts from the port in Idra-Chora and follows the main walk way through town. After the town it snakes and switch backs up the mountain. Very easy to follow all the way to Profitis Illias Monastery (480 meters). There are outstanding views from here. To find the trail to the summit of Eres go to right side (west side) of Monastery and go through a gate between the Monastery and a side building (had a mule in it). The path decents between stone walls till you reach a field. Cross the field and find a gate in the stone wall. After the gate the trail is well marked. The 360 view from the summit is excellent and especially off the south side
