Ascent Trip ReportIt was 4:24am when I left my apartment in Cambridge to head to the Willey range. I would be meeting Greg and Desi from hike-NH. We met up at the Highland Center and got started around 8am. The trail was well packed and we had no problems following the trail to Tom. Desi would hike with us until the junction with the Avalon trail but then headed back. The spur trail to Tom had beautiful snow cover. It was –8 degrees on the summit and a little windy. Friggin cold! This was the first hike that I would get to use my balaclava. It snowed the entire hike and we had no views. Next stop was Field. The trail was hard to follow in spots and we made our way over some drifts. We had a quick stop on Field before heading over to Willey. More drifts but we were able to find the trail. We only saw one other group all day, a group of three Canadians and would share the Willey summit for a bit. We headed back and down the Avalon trail where we got to do some awesome glissading. All was good except for when I almost went off a cliff. But I was able to grab a tree to save myself and I yelled to Greg to warn him as he was following. We went up the steep but short spur to Avalon and got our only views of the day. We could see a little of Crawford Notch and the Highland Center. Desi met us on the trail on the way back and we got some food at the Highland Center afterwards. I got to meet some new hiking friends and had a great hike!
