Ascent of San Gorgonio Mountain on 2007-05-19| Date: | Saturday, May 19, 2007 | | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | | Peak: | San Gorgonio Mountain | | Location: | USA-California | | Elevation: | 11499 ft / 3504 m |
Ascent Trip ReportI had planned to start this hike around 4:00pm and to camp at High Creek. Instead, because of traffic, I didn't reach the trailhead until about 6:30pm. I still tried to push for High Creek, but seeing a bear just past Vivian Creek slowed my progress somewhat (I would never have made it before dark anyway) and I ended up camping at Halfway Camp.
The next morning, I started around 6:30am and was at the summit at 10:00am.
The views from the top are spectacular and worth the long climb (which I am convinced is more than the 16 miles that I read about).
Getting back down seemed to take forever, especially between High Creek and Halfway Camp, and the final stretch back to the trailhead when I was once again carrying all my gear (about a 25 lb. base weight).
