Ascent Trip Report

The cables went up before the advance reservation window, so I finally scored a permit. My friends couldn't adjust their schedules at the last moment, so ended up solo hiking it via the Mist Trail. 6 am from trailhead parking lot, up to the summit just before 11 am, ~9.5 hours round trip. The big push of hikers at the cables was around noon, so I timed it right and the cables weren't crowded (all to myself on the way up, and only passed a dozen or so on the way down). I think the fact that this was only the second day the cables were up contributed to a really pleasant hike. In fact, I was by myself for most of the hike away from the cables and the falls on the way out. The cables were much steeper than I had expected, and no grip on polished granite, so had to basically descend using my arms. A harness to clip into the cables can be useful, though I didn't have one. The most surprising thing was the white-throated swifts when I was on the cables. I'd stop on my way down to let the climbers pass me, and the swifts zoomed by almost within touching distance, so I could hear the whoosh of their wings. My eyes were drawn to them and trying to follow them can make you dizzy - so had to get my eyes back to the rock or even straight down. Fun hike!
