Ascent Trip Report

Since there are now private property issues (and a large iron fence) at Cow Canyon Saddle along Glendora Ridge Road, we decided to use alternate routes as suggested by the Sierra Club. Starting near the visitor center in Mt. Baldy Village, we headed up Bear Canyon Trail, aka Old Mount Baldy Trail, to Bear Flat and then set off on HPS Route 2. The beginning of the route is a little sketchy and quite overgrown in places but once through the brush it became a scenic hike through the West Fork of Bear Canyon and along the ridge that runs north from Lookout Mountain. This is definitely longer than HPS Route #1 but not as steep with more variety and a good deal more shade than the exposed route up the south side of the mountain. Bagging Peak 6930 added a bit of elevation gain and some bonus views, particularly toward the west.
The return trip took us down Route 3 to a saddle just northwest of Peak 5696, followed by a steep descent with loose footing to Bear Canyon Creek where we rejoined the Bear Canyon Trail. From there, it was a straightforward hike back to the vehicle.
