Ascent Trip Report

Climbed Baldy via Register Ridge today. I was the first up Register Ridge. There was no more than 6" of snow. There were drifts that were deeper but even those were only knee deep. I brought snow shoes but never used them. I did bring crampons and ice axe and used both and was very glad to have them. Neither was needed up RR, but definitely required for Devil's Backbone and the summit climb. The wind on the saddle between Harwood and Baldy was wicked strong and blowing snow and ice at painful speeds. The wind only got stronger as I approached the summit. I met a nice woman who had climbed up via the Bowl and was turning back short of the summit. It was near white out conditions at this point and not because of clouds or snow falling. It was all blown snow and ice. She was going down the same way she came up. To me there really wasn't enough snow/ice to make the bowl safe. If fact, on the way up RR I saw a large rock slide with large rolling rocks on the Southwest end of the bowl. She continued on her way after a brief conversation. I went on to summit and as expected once the summit started to round to the peak the white out conditions abated. However, the wind intensity increased. This was the strongest winds I have experienced on Baldy. I tapped the summit plaque and headed down via Ski Hut. The snow is melting fast. It was a sloppy mess crossing the bottom of the bowl and mostly gone from the trail below the Ski Hut. Mountain Forecast indicated the wind on the summit would be 20-30 mph. It could not have been more wrong!
