Ascent Trip Report

This county has 3 candidate high point areas, it would take me 2 visits to complete, all as per this one only TR.

VISIT 1 DATED 2015-01-29 ..... scouting trip of sorts, unsuccessful.
I came here armed with Bill Schuler/Scott Surgent's TR and with the hopes of successfully following their footsteps to the 3 summits - it wouldn't happen, on this day I was refused access somewhat coldly.

As we slowly drove west on CR 177, checking out the TH for Area 1, we were followed by a white truck who purposely stayed behind us. He pulled-in behind us at first House #1201 on the left (.75 miles west of the last road bend), large stone sign "Eddie and Ami Huddleston".

I went to the truck driver, "I am here to talk to the owner."
The not smiling gentleman shortly responded. "That's me, what do you want."
"I am looking for permission to visit the County High Point that is......"
He quickly interrupted me with, " What do you mean by County High Point?".
"It's the highest point of land in a County, it's located on that ridge.", pointing easterly to the ridge.
"There's nothing like that around here, we're done." He coldly responded and quickly drove off to the rear of his garage. We got the message.

I really don't know if he owns the land with the HP and I wasn't about to ask. There was, on this day, an open gate just north on this bend and a good distance from the house. As Bill writes, its an easy hike from here to Area 1 & 2. We were somewhat put-off by this guys reception, didn't feel comfortable, so we left.

Went to check out an eastern approaches for the southern Area #3. We returned to CR175 and went south .7 miles to a left (east) bend .... straight ahead (south) is an open track to a field, and on the right (west) is a gated fence. This corner is void of any signs (rare in Texas). This spot is exactly east of house #1201 on CR177 and looks to be a good alternate TH for Areas 1 & 2. I was somewhat still upset with the cold reception I had just received, so I wasn't in a risky-state-of-mind.
About 100 yds before this bend on the right is a ranch house set back-in (everything locked-up, no way to get their attention).
We continued south on CR175 about 1.8 miles to a the bridge over the creek that was out and being rebuilt. Our plan was to reach #3 from a short distance further south.

Perhaps another time.

VISIT 2 DATED 2018-01-23 ... successful to all 3 areas on mostly track ..... 8.7 miles, 4:35 hours RT
I provide here a detailed report for this successful visit to the 3 areas, using Bill's "hindsight" approach - we went to all 3 areas from the same TH (turned out to be a good route). All my hiking distances are estimates. My route can be seen with a close look at the satellite imagery.

Driving Directions:
From Early we went north on Hwy 183 for 17 miles to JCT 183/FM1689 where we zeroed our odo.
00.00M ... left Hwy 183 eastbound on FM1689.
07.27M ... turned right (south) on CR175
07.70M ... passed CR 177 on right (Bill's route), stayed straight on CR175
08.32M ... CR 175 bends left (east). THIS WAS MY TH (31.96406,-98.80921) - see below for details of the climb.
08.89M ... CR 175 turns right (south)
10.00M ... pass CR 165 on left, across road on right (west) is a ranch road #1350 (with corral and buildings) heading west
10.38M ... crest of CR 175, tall gated fence on right. Road heads west towards Area 3. We went to House #1511 just before this road crest. Lady didn't know name of owner, apparently no one lives on the property.

We drove back to "08.32M" and our TH.

From TH I hopped the gate on the west side and hiked/climbed west along the south side of a fence line .75 miles to the top of the ridge where I hopped a gate (31.96404,-98.82119), then followed a track along the ridge southwest .3 miles to AREA 1(31.96061,-98.82387). I actually lost the track half ways, just followed grass pathways and deer trails in dense brush to the HP ( east of the tall clump of junipers).

I continued by going west a short distance where I found/followed wide grass-path-way going southwest 300 yds to a faint 4-way track-JCT (31.95888,-98.82565). I turned/descended steeply left (south) 300 yds to a T-JCT with a good road (31.95707,-98.82421). I believe this is the road on #1350 CR 175 at "Mile Marker 10.00M" above.
I turned right and followed the good road southwest .7 miles to a JCT (31.95207,-98.83066) - a track on the left heads east (my route to Area 3). I continued west on the good road 200 yds where it heads north, I stayed west and climbed X-country along a fence line .4 miles to AREA 2 (31.95161,-98.83850), hopped fence on-route. No way to locate the County Line and there-by "the" spot.

For Area 3 we returned to the JCT noted previously and continued east on the track .3 miles to a fork where I stayed right and descended/snaked/ascended .7 miles to a T-JCT with a good road (31.94624,-98.82238). This road comes up from the crest of CR175 at "Mile Marker 10.38M above".
I bushwacked southwest up the steep slope 200 yds to the ridge then a ridge track for .3 miles, to the left is AREA 3 (31.94158,-98.82760) is in the woods.

This route is mostly grazing land, however there were no animals out today. Except for a few short steep climbs, this is an easy trip. I backtracked the 3.9 miles to the TH in 2 hours.

I consider myself lucky today to have bagged Hamilton, 21 to go. While I was away Rose's wait was quite, one truck went by with a wave.
