Ascent Trip Report

It’s Friday, woke at 5:03. Made ready and with a clear sky started for Nye and Street. It had rained the day before so I got soaked early and stayed wet almost the entire day. The blow down had obscured the herd path in many places. I placed a few markers of my own to help me get back and with my trail book in one hand and my compass in the other, did the best I could. I reached the canister on Nye at 10:10. I couldn’t see Street but I knew it was south so that was my general direction. I met two other hikers as I was leaving Nye, later I would copy their names from the Street canister because they ended up on the second peak before me and they got down and signed out before me. I got lost.
Actually that’s putting it mildly. I first lost the herd path on the way off Nye and as I followed the compass reading continued to move in the general direction of Street until the very faint path or clear area I was following completely disappeared. When I turned around to try backtracking there was really no evidence that I was on a trail of any kind, I walked back and found nothing familiar. I turned around again and decided to bushwhack my way across the East side if Street. After some time I became completely disoriented and a little panicked because the bushwhack had become more difficult and the compass readings did not appear to be taking me towards a summit. I considered going east and trying to make my way back to the Loj. But after some difficult bushwhacking realized that it would take me hours to travel the distance back under these conditions so I opted for the next best thing and that was to ignore the compass which was getting me confused, because I was unable to see any discernable landmarks. I finally opted for regaining altitude hoping that I was on the side of Street or that from the high point I could figure where I was and where I should go. I just headed up. I finally found some colored string, and then a few plastic flags and enough of a path to follow it to the summit. At 12:58 I arrived, 2.5 hours from Nye to Street. It doesn’t sound terrible but I wasn’t comfortable most of the time. The path I reached the summit on was going SW., which means I had wandered partially around the mountain while I was lost. After a short break of 10 to 15 minutes I was recovered enough to consider leaving.
I left Street going north and following a good herd path and again I lost it and ended up bushwhacking east, in the direction of the Loj. After 10 to 15 minutes I came to a familiar area and it was the same place I had lost the herd path off of Nye, when heading towards Street. Now I tried going east instead of south and again lost the path. As I continued to bushwhack east I somehow crossed the original herd path I had climbed when heading for the basin between Nye and Street on my original climb of Nye. Without too much further difficulty I returned to the Loj and my car, reaching them by 4:30.
I left the parking lot after a cold Snapple, and going down Rte. 73 stopped at Lower Cascade Lake for a swim, a change of clothes and then the long trip home. I got back just before midnight. (25 down, 21 to go.)
