Ascent Trip ReportThe weather forecast predicted the rain would end and clear up around 10am or so. That worked for me last weekend when I hiked Flume and Liberty. Alas, this week it didn’t happen. Everyone we talked to on the trip seemed to have the same plan, hoping for clear weather later on based on the forecast. We started at Lafayette Campground and went by foggy Lonesome Lake before heading up Fishin’ Jimmy. I liked following the brook for much of this trail. All the trails were wet and muddy and my boots kept my feet dry somehow. Before hitting the junction with the Kinsman Ridge Trail we saw a wet, shivering, miserable dog on the path. It’s the first time I’ve seen a dog hiking that wasn’t happy. Poor guy. We continued on and briefly stopped at the North Kinsman summit. Before hitting the south summit there was a group of guys just below the summit drinking beers. Why haven’t I done this? On this day I’m sure the beers were cold. We went to the South Kinsman summit and took some pictures before having lunch below the summit. Instead of taking Fishin’ Jimmy on the way back, we decided to take the ridge trail over the Cannon Balls. This was a LONG 2.5 miles. Great workout! I found out when I got home that the Cannon Balls NE peak is #100 on the NEHH list. It started clearing up somewhat before we hit the junction with the Lonesome Lake trail so we flirted with the idea going up Cannon for some views. But I remembered the back side of Cannon is pretty steep so decided against it. The Lonesome Lake had the sun shining across it this time. I estimate the trip was 11.1 miles, 4050 feet elevation gain and took us 6:40. #19 and #20 for me! I was disappointed with the lack of views but still enjoyed the hike a bunch.
