Ascent Trip Report

Started at the trailhead parking lot below the AMR Golf Course. Despite draggining in the morning we made really good time all the way to the the other side of the lake. Just after the lake we caught up to two groups. We were moving faster but took a few breaks to adjust layers and eat some snacks so we kept playing leap frog with the others. The snow gradually got deeper and one group decided to bail when they felt their snow shoes weren't going to cut it. We kicked steps and didn't have much trouble on the way to the summit of Sawteeth. After dropping down and heading up Pyramid the snow really started getting deep. We pushed on and after some hard work ran into an icy rock step. After a few tries without, we decided to put on the crampons which made all the difference. It was a little difficult to follow the trail up to the summit since no one had been up there since the snow had come down. Since it was cold and cloudy we didn't spend much time on the summit. The trail across the ridge toward Armstrong was covered in waist deep snow and we definitely were off the trail a few times but I knew we were headed in the general direction we needed to go. Finally we came across the junction between the trail to Armstrong and the way down. Shortly after this Meghan, who had been having a very strong day and felt unusually warm, crashed hard. I'm not sure if it was dehydration or something else. Meghan had a better idea from what she learned in her schooling. We forced her to drink some soup and keep moving. I was a little worried and had never seen anything like that, especially how quickly it happened. It was a little scary and it shed some light on how someone could have a condition like that and be incapable of making it out. I'm really glad I was there with her in that moment and that she knew what she needed interms of nutrition to treat the issue. The rest of the way back to the trailhead was incident free but long and we ended up in the dark shortly before making it to Lake Rd.
