Ascent Trip Report

#4/5 in Vermont. I ascended via the Haselton Trail, which starts at the ski area and ascends in the forest between ski trails. The first section of forest actually feels secluded. It contains such interesting features as a mini knife edge in the forest, a pass below a zip-line, and 20+ small brook crossings in quick succession. The top section is on a ski trail, which is surprisingly the most scenic part, since there are many wildflowers and excellent views. The trail ends at a lot on the toll road. I crossed to the far side and headed out on Southlink, which I was initially unsure was the right ways to go, but I wanted to avoid hiking on the road. This trail had much up and down. I followed it to a connector to the Long Trail, which I took past the Nose, avoiding what is clearly the 6th 4000-footer in Vermont. Unfortunately, it is closed to the public due to radioactive cell towers! The Long Trail follows the Nose access road down to the visitor center, which I did not go in because of massive crowds. The ridge walk on the Long Trail was very beautiful, but the crowds detracted from the scenery. This is the equivalent of the Franconia Ridge in Vermont, except with road access. Views of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain were excellent today. Some sections on the ridge were quite bouldery and interesting. The summit was quite crowded as well, but I found a spot to myself. I enjoyed the views down the ridge to the Green Mountains and straight below into the cliffy Smuggler's Notch. I descended on the Long Trail to the north, which was a crazy route that was not very good for descent. There were rock scrambles unsettlingly close to the edge and at least one long chimney. It was a quick drop to the base of the cliffs though. I decided to visit the Adam's Apple, where I found much greater solitude as well as an incredible view of the cliff I had just descended. The Long Trail beyond here was a nice choice for descent.
