Ascent Trip Report

Trip with Boston Hiking Meetup Group - people of various levels of hiking experience, including a first time winter hiker who didn't bring snowshoes!! Started from Appalachia - showshoed up to the RMC Gray Knob shelter via Airline, Randolph Path, Spur and Hincks trails. One member of our group was unable to proceed the final mile after postholing for several hours. After trying various things to help (including carrying his pack and mine), I gave him my snowshoes for the final stretch up, and postholed through thigh-deep snow up to the shelter. Overnight at Gray Knob was nice - temps were in the 20s till dinner time (heat from wood stove) and dived south after. In the morning, ascended Lowes' Path towards Adams, but turned back by high winds above treeline (expected this from the weather radio, which called for 60 mph winds). Returned to Gray Knob, ate lunch, then retraced to Appalachia.
