Ascent Trip Report

Headed north on US 220 from US 58/Martinsville. Turned onto Country Ridge Road, CR 609, after passing CR 879 and the Jukebox Cafe. Parked by a utility pole near the junction with Fawndale Road.

I simply walked into the woods and continued downslope, crossing a stream and then arriving at a power line swath. Crossed the swath with some difficulty (briars). Crossed a smaller stream and continued northward thru mature forest. Arrived near the base of Skelt. Half the mountain has been clear cut. I tried ascending the cleared side, but brambles and briars were numerous. I managed to make my way to the still forested slope and climbed rather steeply to the summit. Good views can be had across the cleared slope. Remains (four footings) of possibly a tower are on the summit as well as a discarded range/oven.

Thorns definitely slowed me down: 45 minutes upslope, 35 minutes back down. There is an atv track on the summit but it ascends from the south and travels westward. From where I parked it's likely 1.5 miles rt. Probably closer and easier if you could access the atv trail. Likely on private land. I saw only one posted sign and that was tacked to a summit tree. A machete might aid in reducing travel time and scratches.
