Ascent of Pico Ruivo do Paul da Serra on 2009-12-06Date: | Sunday, December 6, 2009 | Ascent Type: | Successful Summit Attained | Motorized Transport to Trailhead: | Car | Peak: | Pico Ruivo do Paul da Serra | Location: | Portugal | Elevation: | 1648 m / 5410 ft |
Ascent Trip ReportSmall parking area at road junction to south. A narrow trail then follows the levada (water channel) north until it enters a wood. Here I went directly uphill through the woodland to meet a wide track, followed this R (east) for 200m to join another trail (signposted) which leads to the summit. This trail presumably crosses the ER208 road further N than my starting point.
The summit is flat with a triangulation pillar (square in cross section and set on a 2m tall pillar with cast-in ladder rungs). There are also 2 lookout points with railings. Cloud was drifting across: I had occasional views extending 1-2 km only.
This was the first summit of a long weekend bagging trip to Madeira: left Funchal airport midday, climbed this mid afternoon, explored the north coast, then did the Pico Ruivo - Arieiro ridge the following day.
