Ascent Trip ReportOn the way to Welland, Ontario, to visit family, decided to make an overnight-detour in order to take in a few more Ontario County High Points (north of Kitchener) ....3 today and 2 tomorrow. Tonight we will stay in Hotel somewhere in the area.
I used Rob Hiemstra's excellent TR for this first High Point, located besides 15th sideroad at the Northeast corner of the county.
The highland of this area "Luther Benchmark" was on the East-West Ridge, to the left (due west) of the TH noted below. Today, this whole Ridge has been mined-out and the whole area, now a large Gravel Pit, is well below the 15th Sideroad level, except for a number of bumps on the westside perimeter of the Gravel Pit.
I agree with Rob that, today, the High Point of this area is now to the eastside of the TH (road) on top of the embankment ....... I found/signed Rob's "geocache", located among 5 tall trees, in a hole under a small log ..... good work by Rob, few others have signed-in.
NB: The "geocache" location noted here is perhaps the High Point of this area, however, perhaps not the High Point of the County ..... Greg will have to relook/reconfirm this High Point.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TH AND HIGH POINT FROM THE SOUTH.
Find your way to Orangeville (North of Brampton) and from the town center motor west on County Road #109 for 27km to a right turn on 15th Sideroad (from the west this Road is 9.2km from Arthur). Drive north on 15th Sideroad for 5.1km to a crest on the road, 15m before a telephone pole on the right), park your car, this is your TH (the Gravel Pit is on the left) ..... the actual High Point is to the right side of the Road (due east) 20-25m up the the very steep embankment just inside the woods.
