Ascent Trip Report

Hike #19 and summit #25 for the Catskill 3500 Club. (5th year)

SouthWest Hunter was the hike and it took place on Sunday not Saturday. Friday's weather was not great and I was lacking sleep from Thursday evening so I decided, on Friday, that it was too much to do for a good Saturday start. Without others to inform it was just as easy to switch to Sunday. I didn't have a good night of rest on Saturday night so in that regard I was not really sharp for a tough Sunday hike.
The pictures include several sunrise shots at Pepacton Res. and the foliage was spectacular for this hike. The lean-to was at the end of the trailed route approximately 3 miles in and located at just under 3500 ft on the devils path. About a tenth of a mile before the lean-to I spotted a cairn on the right of the trail it appeared to be at the crest of the ridge leading southwest. I returned to it after snacking at the lean-to and it turned out to be a very good herd path that went right past the summit of the peak about a tenth of a mile below the top of the hill. It saved me a great amount of effort and time on what would have been a 1/2 mile bushwhack in and out. Unfortunately I was joined on the summit by two other hikers and forgot to get a picture of the canister and the gear to document the trip. (I did sign in)

Hike start was around 8:45 I was on the summit at 12:10, not fast at all, and the assent was tougher than expected considering how many hikes I've completed this season. (age and being tired)
I was back at the car by 3:00. Downhill was a lot faster than the up this day.
When the hike started the temp. was 45 degrees and after 1 mile I was warm enough to switch from cool weather gear to shorts and a t-shirt. At 3:00 the temp was at 73 degrees, bright sun and a good breeze most of the day. After returning from the summit I stopped at the lean-to again for a short break I was considering hiking over Hunter to complete a loop trip back to the car, I didn't take note of the time but I thought that gaining another 500 plus feet from my present location and extending the hike distance over 1.5 miles from what I still needed to complete was more than I should ask of myself. (mind was willing but body was not) With the sun setting earlier I thought getting home a bit earlier was not a bad idea. Was home at about 7:00 just as dark was seeping in.
