Ascent Trip Report

This will be one of the shorter hike reports.

My plan was to rise at 5:00 and take my time getting to the meeting place. I was meeting Matt and Cortney. I had chosen a late starting time (9:30 meeting, 10:00 start) because I knew this was not a killer hike. I'm also aware that I will not be hiking often this summer so each one needs to be completed without the rush of getting it done, and heading home, (the boys are a little easier to handle in some ways).

Well, I got to bed about an hour later than expected because I did not start packing until around 10:00PM, and I did not hear the alarm at 5:00. I was awake thinking that the alarm would go off at any second and realized it was getting light out. Checked the clock and it was 5:53AM.

Got up dressed, and was about to leave when I went back to check Chris and the boys to make sure they were alright. All snoring and no clue that they knew I was leaving. I thought about the need for a cell phone just in case I was in-route and I needed to let Matt know that I was on my way. Oh well that's an idea that needs further development. I'll just cut some corners and get there as fast as I can.

I was in the car and headed down the road by 6:08AM. Now because I was cutting corners some of the times were not recorded but I skipped the bank and headed straight to Apalachin for breakfast and Gas. Used the drive-up window because there was a line of four inside (I usually go in because there is no one there) Filled the car at Kwikfil and left the gas station at 6:28 for Route 17 going West. At 8:10AM I was in Margaretville at the grocery getting a bologna sandwich and at 9:05 I had reached the meeting place at the corner of Route 214 and Route 28 in Phoenicia. (not bad) I decided to take a walk and loosen up after the drive so I took out the GPS and did a mile getting back to the car at 9:28AM. At about 9:45AM Matt arrived.
In the process of getting to the trailhead, which was just around 6 miles away, gearing up and getting started I did not record anything.
We did a steady climb and reached the summit of Wittenberg(3780) at 1:20PM, perfect day for climbing, low bugs, not to hot, no rain. We had lunch and left the summit for the return trip at 2:35PM.

Here it is 7/27 and I don't think I ever completed this hike report. I was probably interrupted by the boys getting up from bed and needing to be put back to sleep.

The climb down was uneventful and we reached the cars by 5:15. I checked the elevation to see what we had gained in the climb, the parking lot was at 1300 ft. So we had added 2480ft of elevation. After a change of clothing we all headed into Phoenicia for ice cream (see what you're missing by not going on these hikes). This is where my notes end. I haven't a clue as to when I got home but I know it was a straight run and the boys were not yet in bed, or even ready for bed.
I was not packing a camera for the hike, couldn't locate it. Cortney had the camera and took some excellent pictures. Also I must say that Cortney did great in the trail even though she said she had only hiked two previous times. She was tired but I think happy about completing the hike. I was just glad the old guy didn't fall behind the youngsters.
Cortney's pictures were placed on her facebook page, if I can get her to
e-mail them to me then I can forward them to the list of "hikers". (I haven't a clue as to how to get them out of facebook and into some other usable form.
