Ascent Trip ReportOn our way from home in Louisiana to our vacation in Colorado, I decided to take a detour before stopping in Raton, NM to Capulin Volcano. I had been driving for 16 hours straight since midnight. I felt like this should be easy hiking being only an 8182' peak. My wife and I drove up the road to the base of the crater and parked. The Temp. was around 55 degrees F, and there was a slight drizzle. We took the trail that circles the crater and is a little over a mile in length. The trail itself was not too strenuous, It features moderate elevation gain and is well worn with plenty of benches along the trail. The view of the surrounding volcanic field is tremendous. Even with the drizzle and overcast skies I could see for miles in all directions. The only problem I personally encountered was a severe headache during the hike. My wife had no such headache, she slept for most of the driving;-). I probably had Altitude sickness and the lack of sleep didn't help. Anyway it was a nice summit and would have been very pleasant without the headache. No Rattlers were spotted.
