Ascent Trip Report

We left Albuquerque after work on Friday and were able to score one of the last campsites in Hyde Memorial Park. We got a decent start in the morning and were on the Windsor Trail (#254) by 8 am. We had done Nambe Lake last month, so the first 2.25 miles of the trail were familiar.

We continued up to the junction with the Skyline Trail (#251) at ~ mile 4.25 and took it toward Lake Katherine. The Skyline trail climbs for ~1.5 miles before reaching a junction on a ridge. The trail to the left is not indicated on the Forest Map at the trailhead, but is clearly a well-used social trail to the summit of Santa Fe Baldy.

The trail becomes more rocky and steep over the next ~1 mile and gains ~1,000 ft to reach the summit ridge. I would call it a light class 2. From here, it is a short walk to the large rock cairn marking the true summit.

It was pretty hazy out from local forrest fires, so the views could have been better. Still, fantastic views of the Pecos, including the Truchas Mountains to the north and nearby Lake Peak to the South. We hiked out along the ridge leading east of the summit and were able to clearly see Lake Catherine below us. There is no trail directly to lake catherine and getting there would likely require a a class 3 scramble on loose scree which my wife and dog were not up for.

We then hiked back to the Junction and continued on to Lake Catherine for lunch and then back tracked to the parking lot. Lake Catherine is fantastic and highly recommended, though there is no camping allowed next to the Lake.

We then backtracked back to the car and were off the trail before 5 pm.
