Ascent Trip Report

We took the Tram fro m the parking lot at 3000 feet up to the top at 8300 feet. It was clear with a very cold wind. In exposed areas the wind was strong and the wind chill factor would have made it about 10 F.
You have to register with the ranger station just down from the tram station. The trail leads out from the station and is 5.5 miles to the summit, about .5 mile there is a fork with a sign to Round Valley to the left, and no sign to the right. We headed right. The trail quickly became not much of a trail, then not a trail at all. We had to bushwhack up through 2 feet high laural type brush. It was easier to boulder hop where you could so we did this as much as possible. Near the top at around 8300 we found the trail again. We followed the trail up to the summit.
Clear visibility, Salton Sea easily viewed, and to the west you could see the ocean.
We headed down the trail the entire way going by a ranger hut about half way back. It had a leaky tap so there was a small river of ice running from it. We got to the tram station at 5:45 and were able to get the 6:00 pm tram down. By the time we got to the parking lot it was dark.
