Ascent Trip ReportHeaded up Sat. Oct 31, 2009, after driving up from Palm Desert the evening before. We had a big breakfast at the greasy spoon Alabama Hills Diner. We left the trail head at 10:30 with Jim taking off in front, who walked by the turn off to the mountaineers route. The mountaineers route goes to the left just before the creek crossing. It is unmarked and about 50 yards into the trail there is a sign saying "This is not the Mount Whitney Trail". You cross the creek tothe south side shortly after going up the mountaineers trail, After about .75 mile you cross to the north side at a small waterfall. Here you head up the ledges by the lone pine, double back a couple of times following the cairns along the cliff. You come out on the trail and it is not far to Lower Boy Scout Lake. Follow the lake along the south side then follow the trail up the edge of the rock fall. You then get to some ledges which you head over following the trail over these ledges to Upper Boy Scout Lake. This is where we camped, it is a good camp site, when we were there it was nearly all covered with snow. Elevation here is 11,300 feet. It only takes about 10 minutes to get back onto the trail from the lake campsite.
