Ascent Trip ReportThe hike to The Twins is scenic and in a beautiful area. I followed Brian’s directions to find the trailhead and parked off the highway. There is parking here for at least 5 cars. The TH is easy to find and I shouldered my pack quickly headed down the trail. It was kind of cold, so I wanted to build up some body heat quickly. The trail doesn’t gain elevation quickly and by the time it crossed the PCT I had only gained about 500 ft. The trail is great as it wanders through the forest. It was cold enough that there was ice on trail puddles and the little ponds were about half covered with a thin layer of ice.
As I approached The Twins (I never could really see the summit because of the forest) the trail forked. I took the left fork and it started climbing steeply towards the north summit. I stayed on the trail until I came to a little saddle on the west side of The Twins. I left the trail and walked west into the crater of The Twins. It is all grass covered and is kind of neat with the walls all around except for the passage that I used to enter into the bottom of the crater.
There was no trail here, so I just hiked up the west ridge of the south Twin. It is a little steep, but leads straight to the highpoint. The views from the highpoint were fantastic on a beautiful clear day. Diamond Peak to the south and the Sisters to the north were beautiful.
Instead of going down the way I came up, I descended the clear slope to the south down to the trail that goes to on to Crane Prairie Reservoir. I went west on this trail and it soon came back to the fork where I went left up towards the north twin. The hike back to the TH was uneventful. Total time was 2.75 hours, 6.5 miles, and about 1700 ft of EG.
