Ascent Trip Report10/24/2009
Wes and I headed out to complete the Black Mountain range. Ran a shuttle, parked SETSOAR at Stepps Gap, drove the Forester down to Balsam Gap where we began. Achieved Blackstock in 40 minutes. Hiked the MST over to highway 128; during this time, weather cleared and we ran into several waterfalls on the trail. Hiked up 128 to Stepps Gap, then ascended Mount Gibbes via unmaintained trail along the State Park/National Forest boundary. Located BM. Descended Gibbes, crossed road and ascended Hallback Mtn via Old Mitchell Trail. Hiked around entire base of mountain trying to find a summit trail, then was informed by two nice ladies that one did not exist. Bushwhacked the 250 ft to summit, located sign. Descended, called it a day. ~9.5 miles total.
