Ascent Trip Report

Day 4 of 4 Loop. Camped at Columbine Lake - the trail just west of the lake to the pass had a large snowfield to cross but well traveled before me. Less plentiful snow years likely won't have this problem in August. From the pass a ducked route stayed pretty low until right below the summit. On the descent I stayed closer to the ridge line and liked it much better. Coming down Sawtooth Pass to Monarch Lake was very slippery with loose gravel over hard slabs. I fell twice and skinned my knee. My legs were probably tired on this last part of the 4-day trip but I still think it was crummy. Lost Canyon & Columbine Lake on an east approach to the peak are beautiful and I highly recommend exploring them; the views of Sawtooth from those vantage points are stunning.

(Day 1: Mineral King to Franklin Lakes. Day 2: Summit Florence Pk & Camp Little Claire Lake, Day 3: Little Claire to Columbine via Soda Creek & Lost Canyon)
