Ascent Trip Report

We were two tourists looking for a great day of photography at Germany's two most famous castles, Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. I'm an amateur enthusiast, whereas Eric is a certified professional, self-employed photographer. He had been in Germany two years earlier, and this time around we were both feeling a bit adventurous. After getting some stunning photos of the castles from the outside from Marienbrucke (Mary's Bridge), we looked up and saw several brave souls climbing the rocks on the opposite end of the bridge, to gain some elevation for better photos. On a somewhat spur of the moment decision, we followed... with no food, water, provisions, or rain gear, just our 15-20 pounds of photography gear. We would climb, shoot pictures overlooking Neuschwanstein, take in the gorgeous surroundings and, well, climb some more. After several hours of this, we consulted the map of the area that I had (well, it was actually a picture I took of the big tourist map they had at the base of the castles) and noticed a cable car running up this very peak. Our plan (once again, spur of the moment, without any research) was to reach the top, take the cable car down and then hitch a ride back to the castle parking lots.
By 5:20pm we had summited Tegelberg, tired but very proud of the ascent and the photos we took. We made our way into the summit restaurant/hotel... and learned that the last cable car down left at 5pm. Rather than spend the night up here when we had a warm hotel room waiting for us in Garmisch (and cognizant of the fact that our rental car down below would probably get towed if it stayed overnight), we headed back down, and made it back just in time to catch the late evening sun on Neuschwanstein. A solid day of photography and hiking!
