Ascent Trip ReportMount Cardigan State park east of Canaan, hwy #4 is an outstanding hiking destination. On today's descent I passed a half mile long line of school kids, teachers and parents ..... I was told there were over 150 plus the adults, kindergarten to grade 5 .... hopefully they all made the summit and had a good time.
From the westside of the park, at hwy 118 east of Canaan, follow the Park signs thru Orange to the State Park and the TH parking (no charge).
I climbed the South Ridge trail (orange) over Rimrock to the SOUTH PEAK, the yellow trail down to pick-up the Clark trail at the AMC Lodge just below the col. The Clark trail up to MOUNT CARDIGAN summit with its Fire Tower (closed), then the Saddle trail (white) over to FIRESCREW and back to MOUNT CARDIGAN. I descended the West Ridge trail ..... total of 4.9 miles and 3 hour RT.
Today's climbs ends an 8 day (I started on Oct 2) whirlwood hiking tour of Southern Vermont and New Hampshire, criss-crossing the Southern part of the States, pursuing a number of different Peakbagger Lists .... in particular "VT's 3500 foot Peaks"(completed) and "NH's Firetowers, County and Promince Peaks" (I need 6 peaks to complete these Lists). The results of this trip exceeded my most optimistic plan ..... most of the mountains were easy short hikes. I will plan to come back to NH this year, before the snow flies in order to complete the 3 NH Lists noted above. On this trip I slept in my van, overnighting in States campgrounds and trail heads, only one night did I use a hotel, in Rochester, NH. Here I ended up locking myself out of my van (it cost me 60$ to get assistance) and to make matters worse .... on the way home I got a flat at Swanton, VT. and even with the assistance from 3 local people I had a very difficult time unscrewing the tire bolts. I would find out the next day, at my garage "Decastris", that the tire was completely ruined, requiring replacement (I ended up buying 2 new tires at a cost of 250$). Also I would learn that the reason for the difficulty in unscrewing the bolts was because the nice looking chrome plated tire bolts (19mm) expand under heat, and therefore the wrench would not fit over the bolt ! ! ! ! a real design flaw which needs to be addressed before the next flat tire ! ! ! !.
