Ascent Trip Report

Like most other peakbaggers over the past few years, this is a sort of re-do for me. I had originally done Mt Tam's east peak in 2012 with Aidan only to find out years later that it is lower than the west peak. As luck would have it, I am in the bay area with the whole family on a northbound road trip to move to Washington from San Diego, so we headed up Mt Tam after spending most of the day at Point Reyes. During out drive approach, Sage succumbed to car sickness and we hurriedly pulled into a turnout with enough time to spare. After leaving a treat in the bushes for the local raccoon population, we were on our way. Following Greg Slayden's excellent peakbagger trip report and GPS track on Becca's peakbagger app, we made our way to the nice pullout near the high point in the road. There is ample room on both sides of the road to pull out here and park. We crossed the road and headed up the well-cut use trail to the fenceline. There is a small 10 ft section which requires pushing through some minor brush. Easy for Becca and Aidan, both in pants. An intro to the world of Keith on the HPS list for Sawyer, Sage, and I as we were in shorts. Sawyer led the way the entire time. This kid has a nose for peakbagging! We reached the high ground near the picnic table outside of the fence and saw a small cairn that has been erected by fellow prominence and county chasers. We took a number of summit photos by wedging my iphone in the fence and using the timer so we are all jumping in the air at the same time. After continuing around the fence, we returned via the same use trail back to the car to re-ascend the east summit as it has excellent views of the entire bay area.
