Ascent Trip Report

having read kathy's report i decided to try elbow canyon for the drive up. my experience was somewhat different: i ended up with sidewall damage to three of four tires (these were BFG all-terrain KO2), one sidewall had a slow leak, one was dangerously close to a large leak, the other was somewhat benign. it's not clear to me if i got the damage on the way up or the way down... i didn't notice the leak until i was almost in elko. the damage was definitely from this trip though. fortunately i was able to get a new set of toyo all-terrain tires in the right size the next day... oh well, only got 19k miles on those BFG, but now i get to compare with some toyo.

the drive up is easy for about 3.5mi, then the rock and high-clearance challenges begin. while i could blame my truck (my range rover is heavier and wider than daryn's jeep), but i'm sure a significant portion of the blame belongs on the operator. in retrospect there were rocks i should have driven over, rather than attempting to drive around.

the hike itself was quite pleasant though. the summit rock is a bit daunting as you approach it, it looks all vertical and class 4+, but as others have written, just wrap around to the east and it's only class 2.
