Ascent Trip Report

My son, Marshall, and I left Kansas City about 10:00 PM and drove all night to reach the Guanella Pass trailhead for Mount Bierstadt at 8:00 AM. It's not the best way to get started on a 14-teener, but with limited free time available, it was the only way to maximize our short climbing opportunity in Colorado. Despite our lack of acclimation to the altitude, we did fairly well on the excellent trail and reached the summit in about 3 hours. My son beat me by about 30 minutes. The last few hundred feet of the climb does have a few spots of very easy Class 3 climbing, but it is probably possible to avoid those areas and enjoy Class 2+ climbing at the worse near the summit. Like all 14,000 foot peaks, the view was great in all directions, with Mount Evans visible to the north and a summit benchmark is easily found. My descent took me just a little over 2 hours. This is a good 14-teener for acclimatization, if like us, you have just arrived in Colorado and need something easier before tackling more difficult peaks. Surprisingly, the road to Guanella Pass was paved all the way unlike many of the other access roads to other 14-teeners.
