Ascent Trip Report

The gate on the east approach on Toll Road was closed.

There is a maze of roads in the area and there are NO signs on any of them.

Here's the most direct route I worked out to the start of the climb from the west:

Head west on Nestucca River Road.
A bit past Elk Bend Campground, turn right onto Elk Creek Road
At Boundary Road, turn left.
Take the first right to an unnamed road. Follow to Murphy Camp Road.
Continue on Murphy Creek Road across a bridge onto East Trask River Road.
Just before Steampot Creek, take a sharp right onto an unnamed Road.
Continue to Old Toll Road and bear right.
At the intersection with Murphy Grade, Headquarters Grade and Toll Road, Continue on Toll Road.
A bit past the intersection, look for a flat grassy area to the left and park here. Toll Road is gated ahead and it's a tight place to turn around.
I brought my mountain bike and probably pushed it 80% of the way. A stronger biker may be able to pedal more. Pushing the bike, plus catching my breath stops, was slower than just hiking up.
Continue on Toll Road to an obvious logging road to the right. Follow this through the gravel area up to an unmaintained and blocked off road. I left the bike here and walked up to road around to the summit. The road is littered with limbs and vegetation which would make it difficult to bike.
The summit is a grassy area with remains of the lookout tower footings and a large ant hill. Elk bedding spots were obvious.
A quick walk back to the bike and a 15 minute ride back to the Subaru. Saw 10+ elk on the way back to Toll Road.

Hopefully these directions will enable you to save the two extra hours of driving I spent working out the route. Took a combination of the Subaru and my handheld Garmin GPSs to find the start. The roads had some tree tops to drive through and there were potholes and rocks in spots, but a non low clearance car should be OK.
