Ascent Trip Report

Left Hwy 20 at 10am on Friday going solo and hiked all the way into Luna Camp, arriving about 6pm. Trail was in good shape the whole way, had to ford a couple small streams. Mosquitoes were pretty thick. Left camp 6:30am and left the trail north of Access Creek to cross Big Beaver Creek. Went through a huge swamp which was totally unnecessary. No logs anywhere to get across, I searched high and low. Creek was running high and fast! I managed to get across at a bend in the creek where it was waist deep. Access Creek basin was still buried under snow. Lots of slide alder bashing after crossing the creek. Solid snow from there all the way up to Luna Col. All snow at the col, but the bivy sites are snow-free. Scramble to the top was all snow-free. 95° and no wind... it was brutal! Reached the top at 3pm. Spent the night at Luna Col which was gorgeous. Sunday left camp at 6:30am and tried descending the north side of Access Creek in the trees which avoided most of the slide alder in the basin, but still had to cross multiple alder-choked slide gullies, so didn't really save any time. Crossed Big Beaver at the same spot but slipped and fell in this time. Luckily didn't get swept away but it was COLD! My permit had me another night at Luna camp but I got there at 11am so decided to just head out. Jumped in Ross Lake for a refreshing swim then went all the way out to the highway at 7pm. LONG day!!
