Ascent Trip Report

Stayed at the Nordic Lodge overnight with Oliver and Laura. They dropped me off at the trailhead on and then went down to Storyland. Hiked from the 19 Mile Brook trailhead starting at 930. First day with the new Limmer Lights. It rained off and on until ~1030. I made it ~ 1.5miles before having to change into my Scarpas as the Limmers were starting to give hot spots on my heels. I felt fine until about 1/4 mile to the summit and then realized I was in trouble. Put on some band aids but it was too late, came home with silver dollar sized blisters on each heel.

For the hike i made good time for the first four miles up the 19 mile brook trail, about 1 hr 50 min. From there I decided I would summit and then have lunch, this was a mistake. The 1.2 miles, or more specifically the half mile from Carter Notch up to the dome was grueling. It leveled out closer to the summit but it took near an hour to go up and another to come down. On the way up, the view from Carter Notch, over the pond up to Wildcat was breathtaking. The steep green mountain in the mist was surreal, like something from a movie. I stopped halfway up to the summit to have half of my lunch. The other half when i got back to Carter Notch. On the summit, the sun started breaking out of the clouds, but still not much of a view today.

Upon returning to Carter Notch I decided that my heels were in no shape to attempt Wildcat as well, plus Carter Dome had taken much more time than anticipated and Laura was expecting me back at the parking lot at 4, so i headed down. I made good time once again on my way back to the trailhead and stopped at the dam by the fire road to have a snack and burn some time in the woods instead of in the parking lot. I watched a Croo member take a while to talk themselves into coming across the dam with their resupply pack.

Not too many people on the trail, one big group on the summit, one couple along the way and four other lone hikers. Pretty quiet all in all. Significantly warmer when I returned to the trailhead, but still pleasant. Great day.
