Ascent Trip Report

The Norman County highpoint was probably my favorite Minnesota County highpoint. It is located within the Frenchman's Bluff Scientific and Natural Area. There is even a register at the parking area in a mailbox, which was filled with hundreds of past guests' comments. From here it is .32 air miles to the highpoint and .48 air miles to the benchmark indicated on the topo map. There is evidence of an old quarry operation here, but most of the land was undisturbed. I reached the summit in 12 minutes after hiking .4 miles and was greeted with excellent views in all directions. From the summit I hiked to the benchmark and arrived 5 minutes later, although it appeared this area is not within the protected boundaries of the Natural Area, since I had to cross a barbed wire fence en route. In addition, no benchmark is found at this location. There is a Witness Post and a large circular concrete pad with an iron pin in it and inscribed with the date "1906", but no tradition metal benchmark disc. The hike back to my car from here took 17 minutes, even though I only covered .55 miles, because I did a bit of photography along the way.
